VIDEO : Peter Capaldi Praises Jodie Whittaker As 13th Doctor

Peter Capaldi has said he thinks Jodie Whittaker will make a ?fantastic? Doctor in Doctor Who. With months of speculation now laid to rest and the Broadchurch actress officially confirmed to take on the leading role of the 13th Doctor in the BBC?s popular sci-fi series, talk is coming quick about the first ever female to step into the Doctor?s shoes. Announced immediately following the Wimbledon Men?s Final on BBC 1 in the UK, Whittaker?s reveal comes alongside current showrunner Steven Moffat stepping down to make way for Broadchurch creator, Chris Chibnall.
A large portion of Doctor Who?s fan base have been calling for a female Doctor for some time now, with a major hint coming in a season 10 episode a little earlier this year that the move would be made. In the episode, Capaldi?s Doctor told his companion Bill (Pearl Mackie) that Time Lords are ?billions of years beyond your petty human obsession with gender and its associated stereotypes.?
It would seem Capaldi was speaking from the heart, as the actor has now spoken out in favour of the casting, saying he?s certain Whittaker will make a ?fantastic Doctor.? He said:
?Anyone who has seen Jodie Whittaker?s work will know that she is a wonderful actress of great individuality and charm. She has above all the huge heart to play this most special part. She?s going to be a fantastic Doctor.?
Though he was always unlikely to speak out negatively about the role, it?s good to see Capaldi instantly jump aboard the positivity train, as there are people out there who are instantly against the decision to finally switch the gender of the Doctor. Despite being an alien who has, for some time been able to change genders during regeneration, some followers of the franchise cannot see themselves getting behind a Doctor that isn?t a man.
Set to make her first appearance in the upcoming Doctor Who Christmas special, Whittaker is likely to be judged by those sometimes vicious viewers immediately upon her arrival. In the episode, Capaldi?s Doctor will fully regenerate, following a process that started in the season 10 finale and resulted in the return of the very first Doctor, David Bradley ? a role that was first took up by William Hartnell.
Whatever the case may be, we?re sure that millions will flock to sit in front of the small screen to see Whittaker and Chibnall make history. Having beaten out other rumored frontrunners, including Kris Marshall, Phoebe Waller-Bridge and fellow Broadchurch star Olivia Colman, Whittaker has obviously impressed in test screenings. We can?t wait to see what she has to offer when she makes her official debut.
