Clay part à la recherché de sa soeur disparue dans les bois aux alentours du sinistre et légendaire Crystal Lake quand il découvre, soudain, au milieu d'arbres couverts de mousse, les restes de vieilles cabanes en bois abandonnées.
Mais quelque chose de bien plus terrible se cache dans les bois. En dépit des conseils et des avertissements de la police et des gens du coin, Clay décide de poursuivre ses recherches. Aidé d'une jeune femme qu'il rencontre parmi un groupe de lycéens venus paser un week-end fort en sensations, ils vont vite réaliser qu'ils risquent de trouver bien plus que ce qu'ils cherchent.
